Treasurer Stacy Garrity and Local Legislators Return More than $61,000 in Unclaimed Property

Lower Burrell, PA - Pennsylvania Treasurer Stacy Garrity announced today that more than $61,000 in unclaimed property has been returned to constituents at a Senior Fair sponsored by Senator Joe Pittman (R-41), Rep. Abby Major (R-60) and Rep. Jill Cooper (R-55) at VFW Post 92 in Lower Burrell, Westmoreland County.

“For many seniors, every dollar matters, and finding even a small amount of money can make a real difference. I want to thank these legislators for partnering with Treasury – bringing our services directly to their communities and making it easier for residents to find unclaimed property and learn about resources available to them.â€

Pennsylvania State Treasurer Stacy Garrity

Since taking office in 2021, Treasurer Garrity has returned more than $1.2 billion in unclaimed property, including a record of over $334 million last year.

“It’s great to see local residents receiving what belongs to them and returning more than $61,000 in a single day is a tremendous accomplishment by Treasurer Garrity and her team. As part of our effort to cut government red tape, the Senate approved legislation that went into effect last year authorizing the Treasury Department to return unclaimed property without the need for owners to search for it – enabling even more money to get back into the hands of its rightful owners as quickly as possible.â€

Sen. Joe Pittman (R-41)

“I’m pleased to work with the Treasury to return money back to where it belongs – my constituents’ pockets. While I encourage residents to check the unclaimed property website, the list can change every day. Bringing the department to the senior expo, makes it easier for unclaimed property to be identified.â€

Rep. Abby Major (R-60)

“Unclaimed property is not a benefit or supplement provided by the state, it’s money or valuable items that are waiting to be turned over to their rightful owners. Treasurer Garrity and her staff routinely go above and beyond to make certain Pennsylvanians verify if they have property waiting for them and her presence at our event is just another example of that.â€

Rep. Jill Cooper (R-55)

Treasury is working to return more than $5 billion to its rightful owners, including over $61 million available to residents in Westmoreland County. More than one in 10 Pennsylvanians have unclaimed property, and the average claim is worth over $1,000.

Unclaimed property includes things like dormant bank accounts, uncashed checks, forgotten stocks and more. It can also include physical assets, such as collectible coins, jewelry and savings bonds, that most often come to Treasury as the contents of safe deposit boxes.

Anyone can search Treasury’s online database at any time by visiting searchandclaimpa.gov. Pennsylvanians who have lived in other states can also search for property at MissingMoney.com for money possibly waiting across the country.
